Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs in billions of individuals worldwide and the treatment of the problem is a priority for our office. To understand hypertension, it is beneficial to understand that blood pressure is the force exerted on blood vessels by the flowing blood. Hypertension is described as possessing a blood pressure level of higher than 140 over 90 mmHg. This is not a strict limit, however and high blood pressure can occur between a range of 140 to 159 or 90 to 99 over that and the patient is said to be in a different phase of high blood pressure.
Hypertension can occur with no symptoms for several individuals, however long-term hypertension can create internal symptoms which a physician can assess through an examination. Complications which can go hand-in-hand with hypertension include:
Alterations to the person’s lifestyle are crucial to sustaining a safe blood pressure level. Several physicians suggest that patients minimize their consumption of salt and alcohol while increasing their consumption of vegetables, fruits, and foods which have low fat levels. Losing excess weight has also been shown to help improve a patient’s blood pressure. Habitually exercise can help them achieve this and also has its own benefits too. Patients are also encouraged to discontinue smoking since it can raise blood pressure as well. If these alterations are not successful alone, medications can also be prescribed. Medications are employed in combination with lifestyle alterations. The choice of medication will depend on the individual and any other illnesses which could be present.
We take Medicare and most of the major PPO and HMO insurance plans. Please call our office for more information.
